Tonka Wrestling 2017-18 Season Information

The information (dates, fees, etc.) below is preliminary and is subject to change. Please check back often for details. 

The Tonka Wave Youth Wrestling club is a fun and competitive program for kids who want to learn and improve their wrestling skills. Kids who participate in this program can expect to learn the basics of wrestling including a variety of takedowns, reversals, escapes, pinning combinations, safety and sportsmanship. Wrestling is a positive youth sport and participants will increase their conditioning, balance, flexibility, strength and self-confidence. All development skills mentioned, makes wrestling the best (cross training) sport available.

Tonka Wave Programs cater to wrestlers of all abilities from beginner to advanced skills. Our goal is to develop young wrestlers from Kindergarten through 5th grade. We also make a conscious effort to pair up kids with other workout partners in their own weight, age and skill level. Per coaches’ discretion, wrestlers may opt up programs based on experience and ability. Practices are held in the Minnetonka High School wrestling room. Our programs:

  • Free Introductory Camp (PreK-5th <1-year experience) – Our introductory program is designed to give new kids a chance to “try wrestling”.  The camp will highlight the rules and teach the fundamentals of wrestling.
    • Tuesday / Thursday’s (10/24 to 11/9 no practice on Halloween) – 6:00 to 7pm - FREE. 
    • Camp Schedule:
      • 6 to 6:15 - warm up and stretch
      • 6:15 to 6:45 - drills and technique
      • 6:45 to 7 - Games (Dodgeball, etc.)
    • To register fill out this form and mail in or bring to the first practice. 
  • Tonka Tusslers (PreK – 2nd) – The Tusslers program introduces kids to the sport by utilizing drills, gymnastics and techniques that teach them the fundamentals of wrestling. Participation in the free camp is highly recommended. Tusslers have the option, with coaches’ approval, to move up to the Youth program at the end or during the tussle season.
    • Tuesday / Thursday’s (11/14 to 1/16) – 5:45 to 6:30pm - $125
  • Tonka Wave Youth Wrestling (3rd – 5th Grade) – The Youth program takes the base wrestling of knowledge to the next level. We practice 2 times a week and will teach technique, drills, conditioning and live wrestling.
    • Tuesday / Thursday’s (11/14 to 3/8) – 6:15 to 7:45 pm - $225
  • Metro Monday’s at the BarnOur traveling team practices one additional night per week offsite. These practices are designed for wrestlers that are experienced and committed to wrestling. The practices focus on advanced technique with ample live wrestling and conditioning.
    • (9/25 to 3/5) – 6:00 to 7:30pm (not included in cost)

Registration: All paid wrestling programs need to be registered online via Sports Engine. Please register ahead of time to save time during the registration process. Registration will be available onsite the night of the first practice.

Wrestling Season: The club wrestling season begins 11/16 concluding at the MN/USA Kids State Tournament in March. We participate in individual and/or team Tournaments on most weekends, but are not included in fee. 

Competition: Our schedule consists of open tournaments and dual meets, team and state/national level competition.

Coaching: The club is coached by U of M All American Mack Reiter, Minnetonka Wrestling Coaches Dustin Michel, Kelli Rasmussen & Al Plante with assistance from Minnetonka Varsity Coaching Staff and parents.

Equipment: Team uniforms (singlet, shorts, t-shirt, ¼ zip pullover) are required for all wrestlers via a $50 rental fee or $150 purchase. Wrestling shoes, apparel, head gear, kneepads, etc. will be available online and at select tournament locations.

Preseason Training Opportunities

Preseason Training allows Wrestlers to improve their skills and begin to get in wrestling shape. Tonka Wave has partnered with NoNonsense Wrestling to provide additional training opportunities:
